"Well, it just didn't sound reasonable."

"Why not?"

"Well, because what was the idea? I can't see what could be gained by it."

"Go ahead. What was your thought?"

"Well, apparently," Della Street said, "the men from the ambulance came up here and found Miss Kaylor just beginning to feel the effects of a big overdose of sleeping pills. She was able to leave under her own power. They put her in the ambulance and took her away. Naturally everyone would assume they were going to take her to a hospital."

"Go ahead," Mason said.

"But instead of that they must have brought her back here and left her to die."

"How did they get her back here?"

"They must have brought her in a back entrance."

Mason walked over to stand by the side of the bed, regarding the girl thoughtfully.

"The only thing is," Della Street said, "I don't see why they'd do that. Why did they take her in the first place if they intended to bring her back?"

Mason said, "It would make a most artistic murder, wouldn't it, Della?"

"What do you mean?"

Mason said, "Miss Kaylor voluntarily took the sleeping pills. Mary Brogan can testify to that. Mary Brogan reported to Paul Drake, and Paul Drake said he'd notify the police. Drake did notify the police. That puts Drake in the clear. It puts Mary Brogan in the clear."

"What are you getting at?" Della Street asked.

Mason said, "Then an ambulance with an unlisted number whizzes around the corner and two ambulance attendants dash into the building. They come out supporting a groggy-lookmg woman between them. No one gets a good look at that woman's face. They put her in the ambulance and drive away."

"You mean they didn't take her away and bring her back? You mean it was some other woman?"

"How do we know that they even went up to this apartment? They could have entered the house and found
